About Women’s Future Development Center

Greetings from the President of Ehime University

President,
Yuichi Ohashi

Accepting diversity in its human resources (of gender, age, nationality and value-system) is crucially important for a university as an organization to develop and to attain full growth. By realizing a diverse environment, the university will be able to meet the educational needs of its students which are constantly changing or the demands of society both locally and nationally with sufficient flexibility and efficiency. Also, to have diverse members operating the university, making full use of their individual strength,we will be able to make dramatic improvements in the performance of our organization. This is what we are seeking for as one of the important purposes of promoting diversity.

One of our core strategies in diversity-promotion is the ‘appointment of women’. Ehime University has been working hard to increase the number of female researchers and to create an optimal environment that fosters and sustains them, taking advantage of our adoption in 2010 by the Grant for Promoting Science and Technology (MEXT) on the ‘Making a pilot program for supporting female researchers’ scheme. Furthermore, by establishing a new institute, the Women’s Future Developing Center as a core of operation, we have been promoting ‘Ehime University Positive Action’ which offers research subsidies for female faculty members, ‘Emika Kids’ in Johoku Campus, the second nursery in the University, provides child care, the ‘Program for Supporting Young Researchers’ which assists in securing sufficient time for those busy bearing and raising children and the ‘Mentor System for Female Researchers’, which promotes the nurture of younger researchers mentally, personally and professionally among staff members.

In April 2012, we set up the ‘Head office for Promoting Diversity’ which consists of the ‘Women’s Future Developing Center’, the ‘Office for Promoting Gender Equality’, the ‘Office for Promoting the Employment of Persons with Disabilities’ and the ‘Office for the Employment of the Elderly’ and our entire university community has been striving for the realization of a diverse environment. The following year, the Office for Promoting Gender Equality was affiliated under the Women’s Future Developing Center, which enhanced both activities integrally. Ehime University regards the Women’s Future Developing Center as the key element in its promotion of human resources for the next generation. We are fully determined to continue targeting the support of female researchers and the promotion of gender equality. Thank you very much.

Greetings from Center Director Rie S. Hori

Dear all, Welcome you to our web site. I suppose that some of you do not know there is a Women’s Future Developing Center in Ehime University. The Center was established in 2010, and since then, has been actively engaged in promoting gender equality and supporting the promotion of active women.
For example, we have made efforts in holding seminars and symposiums to raise awareness, and planning and executing various programs to achieve our goals. Furthermore we have been involved in establishing on-campus nurseries and providing care for the elementary school children during the long term vacations (Summer, Winter and Spring) as our childcare supports, as well as support for young researchers who are having burden of childbearing and child-raising. Also, we are active in nurturing the next generation, holding a number of events for female high and junior high school students and other events for elementary school students every year. Those activities are planned and conducted with the cooperation of ‘Science Himeko’ which is run by the female students majoring STEM at Ehime University.

Now, I would like to tell you about the history of the establishment, and the progress of the Center. Our Center was born largely because of the appeal of its first Director, Hideko Koshima (a former professor of the Faculty of Engineering).
At that time, actually there were less female professors in the field of science and engineering than there are today, and Prof. Koshima had been having a hard time. So her request was the creation of a university in which the younger generation does not have to suffer from the same problem she had, where both men and women could be equally active. Firstly she started a Working Group which discusses on the theme related to gender equality in Ehime University and then, taking advantage of our adoption by the Grant for Promoting Science and Technology (MEXT) on the ‘Making a pilot program for supporting female researchers 2010-2012’, succeeded in establishing the Center in 2010.
Since then, the Center has been in active operation and as a result, the long-awaited on-campus nursery, “Emika Kids” is now open at the Johoku Campus. In the Shigenobu Campus (the University Hospital and School of Medicine), there had been a nursery, but we could not meet the needs of our workers, who had expressed a wish for a nursery facility in the Johoku Campus for a long time. Through this experience (going through these circumstances and processes), we learned that improving and arranging both the internal and external environments is crucial in realizing our aims.
Then, as one of the subordinate organizations of the Promoting Diversity Council of the University, we are aiming to create a working environment which enables both men and women, including the young researchers with children, to be active in accordance with their work-life balance. We are glad to say that in these few years, the cooperative activities of a consortium of five universities in Shikoku, the collaboration with local businesses and other partnerships with Ehime University have been becoming broader and more effective.

We will continue to make every effort to support the promotion of active women and the promotion of diversity by cooperative relationships with you, together with stakeholders. We do appreciate your support and cooperation.

Approach to Increase Female Faculty Members

As for raising the percentage of the female faculty members, we had been conducting Ehime University Positive Action as a main measure from 2011 to 2014. Both in 2105 and 2016 we reviewed the measure and from September, 2016, we have started the open recruitment only for women under the ‘Ehime University President-strategy, Female Faculty Positive Action Program’.
